Consultation for Families in Taiwan
"Are my children ready for studying abroad? Am I ready for this? What types of challenges will I/they encounter?
What can I/they do to be more prepared?"
These are common questions families have as they prepare to send their children overseas for a better education. In my role as a consultant, I help families prepare for their adolescents and young adults' journey to the U.S. by getting to know the family's history and concerns and by providing individualized assessment and recommendations.
Specifically, I utilize various assessment tools to understand adolescent and young adults' strengths, personality, coping styles, family dynamics, interpersonal relationships, academic history, and mental health history. Based on the assessment results, a specific list of recommendations will be provided for the families (e.g., the type of college environment that might be a good fit, resources that are potentially need, how to access certain resources in the U.S. etc.).
03
Consultation for Host Parents in the U.S.
"What should I do to be a culturally competent host parent? Are there anything that I should know about working with teenaged, Mandarin-speaking international students?"
I help adults in the U.S. to prepare for their transition into life as host parents. Culturally sensitive consultation focusing on actionable strategies is provided for those who are interested and/or plan to host Mandarin-speaking international students.

Topics that are often discussed include, but not limited to, the following:
-
How to prepare for the day-to-day cultural differences?
-
How to negotiate boundaries ahead of time (Am I a friend, an acting parent, or a landlord/lady?)
-
How do I prepare myself mentally as a host parent?
-
How to manage interpersonal conflict that might arise?
-
How do I help the students manage their academic and/or mental health issues?
04
"How could we provide an environment that is sensitive to diversity issues and is conducive to learning for students, especially those who are born and raised outside of the United Stated? What are some specific cultural considerations that should be incorporated into the design of curriculum and support services?"

Helping students navigate academic and personal challenges can be a difficult task. These challenges may be further exacerbated by cultural and linguistic barriers. Research shows that well-designed orientations and trainings, as well as ongoing support could substantially increase the competency and decrease burnout among school administrators, staff, and faculty.
